Unlocking Knowledge,
One Gene at a Time.
Get to know Decodomics
Gabrielle and Srijak met at the University of Calgary as colleagues. They developed bioinformatics pipelines to study ecosystems, including microbial souring and microbially-induced corrosion prevention in North American shale oil reservoirs, and microbial hydrocarbon metabolism in marine and freshwater environments.
Their academic roles fostered strong industry connections, which evolved into consulting. Driven by entrepreneurship and a desire to bring their expertise to support the Canadian industry, they launch Decodomics Inc. in the Summer 2023.
Meet The Team

Gabrielle Scheffer, MSc
CEO & Founder
With more than 10 years of experience in microbiology, Gabrielle completed a BSc with honours in microbiology and molecular biology in 2017 (Universite de Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada), a MSc in environmental microbiology in 2020 (University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada), and a PhD in geomicrobiology in 2024 (University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada).

Her research focused on extremophiles: microorganisms inhabiting extreme environments (high temperature, high salinity, high radiation levels, etc). She worked on numerous samples from different environments including, but not limited to, unconventional oil reservoirs (onshore/offshore), agricultural farms,
oceanic sediments and lakes.

In the recent years, she has applied her knowledge and interest of bioinformatics to lead multiple metagenomics studies which have helped companies answer key questions. Because of this, she decided to start Decodomics to expand her ability to provide services beyond the academic world.

Srijak Bhatngar, PhD
CSO & Founder
Srijak is a seasoned computational biologist and bioinformatician with over 15 years of experience in analyzing biological data. He specializes in environmental microbes and their ecology spanning multiple environments, including petroleum and hydrocarbon-associated systems, marine and freshwater ecosystems, and soils, aiming to understand the intricate relationships between microbes and their surroundings. This has led to many high-impact publications, presentations at national and international conferences, and collaborations with interdisciplinary teams to push the boundaries of microbial science.

As a CFO of Decodomics Inc., Srijak continues to drive impactful research at the intersection of microbiology and environmental sustainability, striving to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and real-world application. His work bridges scientific research with real-world applications, supporting industries and organizations in achieving environmental compliance, sustainability goals, and microbially informed solutions.

He received an MS in Bioinformatics from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of California Davis. He also worked as a bioinformatician for the UC Davis Genome Center. Subsequently, He joined the University of Calgary as a postdoctoral researcher studying the microbiology of hydrocarbon-associated systems. Currently, he is a computational biology and microbial ecology professor at Athabasca University. Based in Calgary, his lab employs cutting-edge DNA-based tools to study microorganisms associated with environmental disturbances, such as microplastics, hydrocarbons, and herbicides, to find pathways to ecological restoration and remediation and contribute toward developing sustainable solutions for ecosystem recovery.

Beyond research, Srijak strongly advocates cross-sector collaboration, working with industry partners, government agencies, and academic institutions to translate scientific insights into actionable strategies. He engages with communities, policymakers, and academic institutions to translate scientific findings into actionable insights. Through workshops, seminars, and public engagement initiatives, he advocates for evidence-based decision-making in environmental management.
